Dividing people into smaller groups make it easier for people to discuss in a closer setting. While the full group allows to you be on the same track, group division lets different groups go about things in their own pace. Smaller groups also allow for more people to speak as they tend to be more engaged.

Benefits 👍

Everything goes on in parallel instead of everyone hearing everything. Different groups also allow for a diversity of opinions to develop in the different groups.

Challenges 💣

Without clear instructions the groups might steer off somewhere where you didn't intend them to.

Group sizes

Alone

Letting people work alone and write down their thoughts help introverts to bloom. It's especially good in the beginning so strong voices in the group don't convince or steer the group into one direction.

Small groups

Working in pairs or small groups are good as a complement to working alone. Here each participant can talk and get a sparring partner.

Larger groups

Groups of 5+ often becomes too big to be functional in an exercise like this.

Everyone

Talk all together.
